Fluff

Posted to Hmmm by god

Funny thing I’ve noticed: my “fluff” posts, the ones that don’t actually say much, are the ones that seem to get commented on, while the posts where I actually say something seem to go unanswered. Let’s look through my June archives. I’ll discount my own comments in these numbers.

Opinion, discussion, or otherwise meaningful (to me):

  • June 01: Me Am Sad: 1 comment
  • June 03: The case for widespread abuse: 0 comments
  • June 07: The Rights of the Dead: 0 comments
  • June 09: Because I Say So: 0 comments
  • June 15: That lovely c-word: 0 comments
  • June 17: Iga Archives: 0 comments
  • June 17: This week’s exciting tech news: 0 comments
Random linkage, nothing said, or otherwise fluff (again, to me)

  • June 01: A note about dosages: 0 comments
  • June 01: Them wacky adverts: 0 comments
  • June 03: John Shirley, Please Have My Children: 2 comments
  • June 04: Synchronicity: 1 comment
  • June 08: Placeholder: 0 comments
  • June 09: Yet Another Darwin Award Nominee: 1 comment
  • June 10: In Bed: 1 comment
  • June 12: Can’t Blog Now: 3 comments (I would like to point out, by the way, that this blog entry, including the title, was four words long. No links or anything)
  • June 17: Anywhere Nookie: 1 comment

Final tally:
Serious: 1 comment / 7 posts ~= 0.14 posts/entry
Fluff: 9 comments / 9 posts ~= 1 post/entry
I’m just sayin’.

Shit, would this post count as serious or fluff? I guess we’ll see how many people respond to it :o)

I think it's a question of laziness. I read a long and interesting post of yours and I have lots of things to say about it, I think, but actually commenting would mean that I would have to formulate my thoughts into something coherent, and then write that down, and I'm way too lazy to do that. Plus, on the rare occasions when I do bother to do that, it ends up either being not interesting enough to post, in which case I don't, or too long to put in a comment, in which case I put it in my blog.

jake is correct. they're more interesting, but your friends and associates are people that are too lazy to put their own opinions on paper in coherent form.
